Student Perspectives

"Being turned down for a job drove me to complete my degree. When I started at Bethel, I only had two credits of college-level work and had been out of school for 20 years. As a single mom, I doubted if I could handle it. It took a faculty member and my admissions advisor to convince me that I could.

In order to make room for school, I asked my family and friends for help. The kids and I celebrated when I got an "A." Every time I completed a course we drew an X through the list on the refrigerator. Months later, after finishing my degree, I walked across the stage at commencement to the music of my kids' cheering. I never thought I could do it, but I did—and did it well!

Immediately after graduation I was promoted to Customer Service Manager with 20 employees reporting to me. Everything I learned in class I have applied to my job and life. Now I help my employees reach their goals. When I conduct classes for employees who want to go back to school, I tell my story. This year two of them will begin the PACE program.

There may never be a `good time' to go back to college. You just have to do it."

—Debbi Jump, Customer Service Manager, Medtronic
